Questions and answers

What is Knob and Dial?

Knob and Dial is a curated catalog of offline products: thermostats, espresso machines, washers, light switches, stereos, watches, locks and grills that work with no Wi-Fi, no Bluetooth, no app and no account. Every pick is also built to last. We don’t sell anything or earn commissions. Each listing links straight to the maker or a retailer.

What counts as an offline product?

A product that does its whole job with no network connection. To be listed, it must have no Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular; no Bluetooth; no smart-home radios such as Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread or Matter; no app for setup or use; no account or registration; and no over-the-air updates or remote shutoff. Connectivity that’s built in but switched off doesn’t count. The Offline Standard has the full rules.

Does offline mean it doesn’t need electricity?

No. Offline means it never connects to a network. Many listed products plug into the wall, like the Speed Queen TC5 washer and the McIntosh MC275 amplifier. Others run on springs, gears or fire, like a mechanical watch or a charcoal grill.

Why buy a non-smart appliance?

Simple things should be simple to use. A connected appliance adds an app, an account and regular updates to jobs a knob already did well, and it can lose features or stop working when the maker ends support or a server goes down. A non-smart appliance has fewer parts to fail, nothing to update, and nothing that sends data about your home.

Are “dumb” appliances the same as non-smart appliances?

Yes. Dumb, non-smart, offline and unconnected all describe products with no Wi-Fi, app or cloud account. We say offline, because there’s nothing dumb about a machine that works every time.

Can you still buy a washing machine without Wi-Fi?

Yes. Washers set with real knobs and no connectivity are still made, like the Speed Queen TC5 top-load washer. Check the exact model number before you buy, because the same brand often sells connected and unconnected versions side by side. See washers and dryers without Wi-Fi.

Is there a thermostat that works without Wi-Fi or an app?

Yes. A manual thermostat set with a dial controls your heating on its own and keeps working through internet outages. The Round by Honeywell Home, designed in 1953, is still made. See non-smart thermostats.

Which espresso machines and coffee makers have no Wi-Fi or app?

Lever and switch-operated machines, like the Olympia Cremina lever espresso machine, the Rocket Appartamento and the Moccamaster KBGV Select coffee maker. See kitchen appliances with no Wi-Fi or app.

Which stereos and turntables have no streaming or Bluetooth?

Separates do: a turntable like the Technics SL-1200G, an amplifier like the McIntosh MC275 and passive speakers like the Klipsch Heresy IV. If you want streaming, plug a small streamer into a line input and replace only that when it stops getting updates. See audio with no Wi-Fi or Bluetooth.

Is there an offline alternative to a smart lock?

Yes. A high-security mechanical deadbolt, like the Medeco Maxum, has no battery to run down, no radio to hack and no app to pair. See mechanical locks.

Do you earn a commission from these products?

No. Knob and Dial doesn’t sell anything, and we don’t earn a commission from any product we list. Links go straight to the retailer, with no affiliate codes and no tracking. We just really like these things. More about our links.

How do you check that a product is really offline?

We read the spec sheets, manuals and maker pages for the exact model, look for radios in regulatory filings and teardown photos, check whether any feature needs an app or an account, and ask the maker when the paperwork is unclear. Every listing shows when it was last checked. How we verify.

Can I suggest a product?

Yes. If you know something well made that works with no app and no Wi-Fi, tell us about it. Every suggestion is checked against the Offline Standard before it’s listed.
