The Offline Standard

Two tests. No exceptions. Every product passes both before it’s listed.

Simple things should be simple to use, and a product you have to update every few months was never built to last. These are the rules every listing is held to.

The two tests

Truly offline

Nothing inside can phone home, update itself or stop working when a server does.

  • No Wi-Fi, Ethernet or cellular
  • No Bluetooth or Bluetooth Low Energy
  • No smart-home radios (Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, Matter)
  • No app required for setup or use
  • No account or registration
  • No over-the-air updates or remote shutoff

Built to last

Made to be repaired, not patched. We look for most of these:

  • Metal, glass, wood or ceramic
  • A maker known for longevity
  • A real warranty or parts
  • Priced at the top of its category

Connectivity that’s built in but switched off doesn’t count. If a product has a Wi-Fi chip you can disable, it isn’t listed. The exact price that counts as high-end in each category is still being set.

How we verify

  1. 01

    Read the paperwork

Spec sheets, manuals and the maker’s own product pages, for the exact model number.

  2. 02

    Look for radios

Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread or Matter. Regulatory filings and teardown photos help where they exist.

  3. 03

Check for an app or account

If any core feature needs a phone, a sign-in or a subscription, the product doesn’t qualify.

  4. 04

    Confirm with the maker

When the paperwork is unclear, we ask the manufacturer or an authorized dealer.

  5. 05

    Date it and re-check

Every listing shows when it was last verified. Models change, so we check again on a schedule.

What the labels mean

Offline Verified
Every item on the checklist is confirmed for this exact model, on the date shown.
Pending owner check
Research is done, but the final check isn’t. Pending listings are marked on their product page.
Offline by design
Manual, mechanical or passive by nature. We still confirm the exact model.
Spec sheet says no Wi-Fi
A retailer spec sheet lists Wi-Fi as no. Bluetooth and other radios still need checking.
Needs confirmation
No source states it has no connectivity yet. We confirm with the maker or a dealer.

Some classics have quietly added Bluetooth. Looks offline, but isn’t covers the ones to watch for.
