Looks offline, but isn’t

Three classics whose current versions added Bluetooth: Tivoli’s Model One BT, Brionvega’s Radio.cubo and Technics’ SL-40CBT.

Some of the best-known offline designs have quietly picked up radios. The cabinet looks the same. The inside doesn’t. Before you buy a classic, check the exact model number.

Tivoli Audio Model One BT

The current version of the classic wood-cabinet table radio adds Bluetooth. See Tivoli’s product page.

Brionvega Radio.cubo (TS522D+S)

The Zanuso and Sapper cube radio now includes Bluetooth, DAB+ and a rechargeable battery. See the listing.

Technics SL-40CBT

A Technics direct-drive turntable with Bluetooth built in. The SL-1200G is the one without it.

How to check before you buy

  • Look for “BT”, “Bluetooth” or a wireless logo in the model name.
  • Read the spec sheet for Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, app or “connect” features.
  • See whether the maker lists an app for that exact model.
  • If the manual mentions pairing, firmware or an account, it doesn’t pass the Offline Standard.
